[ale] X resolution changing

Been thinking a bit...I have an application, xdosemu, which I would like to
have start in a 640x400 X resolution. I've already mentioned dedicating a
machine for this, but what I would really like to be able to do is this:
Click shortcut to DOS Prompt in a window manager. xdosemu starts up on a new
desktop in 640x400 mode. When I exit it, I am back on my regular desktop.
I know that there is some way to start two instances of X - so perhaps this
would be one possible way? Or, what if 640x400 is supported in my XF86Config
-- is there a way to call that resolution when the program is launched, perhaps
in a script? How would I make this window be borderless and stay on top of
other things, such as the window manager's panel?
Thanks for any advice,
