FWIW, pick any random android device out there, old or new, and with 
very few exceptions you will not be able to get it to boot up (much less 
usefully operate) using what's provided by the Android Open Source 
Project.

Nearly every android device relies on what amounts to a private, 
proprietary fork of the AOSP codebase.  Both low-level and application 
code alike.
