[ale] scripting primer

I been doing some stuff under ash and bash. Where can I read up on the
syntaxt used?
My programming background is in fortran 77 and Basic for science and
engineering on the Vax (mid 80's).
No C experience.
BTW what is a good primer on OOP?
Ps thanx for the desktop suggestions.
