The CUPS project comes from the Easy Software company who makes
commercial printing software for Linux, IRIX, and so on.  The CUPS
software being free is a great framework for printing, however, the
support for plotters is limited.  If you have a few bucks to spare,
practically any printer/plotter ever made is supported by the commercial
package.  It is seamless between machines and has great support.  I
prefer this solution even though it costs because it works so well.
