[ale] character set question

What do I change in order to activate the DOS style line drawing
characters (from 176....223)?  
I have tried various fonts in the /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts directory,
using consolechars -f (fontfile)
Some of them look nice, but I haven't found one yet which shows lines
instead of accented alpha characters.
Am I looking in the wrong place? 
man consolechars, man termcap, etc  don't help. 
(Maybe if they were translated into some known human language....)
