Sounds like you're starting xdm by default. As long as your keyboard
still works, hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to escape to tty1. (Alternatively, hitting
CTRL-ALT-F2 escapes to tty2, CTRL-ALT-F3 to tty3, etc etc. From the
console, ALT-F7 returns to X by default)
that order; killing X first will just cause xdm to respawn it again.
After these processees are killed, you can reconfigure XFree86 to behave
as you want it to, mouse and all.
